What is impressionism?
Impressionism is an art movement that originated in France in the 1860s when artists like Monet and Renoir began capturing the atmosphere of a scene rather than painting a realistic depiction. The style prioritized light and color and is often characterized by loose and softly blended brushstrokes.
Many of the impressionists actually painted outdoors rather than in a studio. This “Plein Air” technique impacted the style significantly. Artists had to work quickly to capture the ever-changing light and weather conditions. Intricate details were left out and loose, spontaneous, sketch-like paintings were born.
Van Gogh and Cezanne followed in what we now refer to as the period of “Post Impressionism” which expanded on the techniques of impressionism but took it a step further using thicker paint, less blending, and more “unnatural colors.”
Impressionism and Post Impressionism were extremely significant periods in art history and influenced many other art movements.
Open Impressionism is a modern style developed by Erin Hanson that picks up where the early Impressionists left off. The brushstrokes are still loose and spontaneous but are now laid side-by-side on the canvas without blending. This provides a beautiful texture and often gives the painting the appearance of a mosaic. When viewed up close, the paintings appear more abstract but come into focus when viewed from a distance.
